Austin Bike Culture Calendar Events: 6/10- 6/16/10

Summer is now in full swing, and there are plenty of opportunities to get on your bike including our next social ride, the Eastside Home Tour, as well as the rain date for our Taste of Downtown II Tour. If you want to make a real statement, the World Ride Nake Day ride for Austin is this Saturday evening.

Here’s a quick run down of recommended events for the coming week from our comprehensive calendar of all cycling events. Thanks to Jason at ATXBS for letting us know about some events we couldn’t find elsewhere. As always, if there is an event you know about that’s not on our calendar contact us, and we’ll add your event on and possibly add it to the weekly round up.

Thursday, June 10

Thursday Night Bike Polo
5:30 PM, Eastwoods Park, 3001 Harris Park Ave
The Austin Bike Polo Club’s weekday match. All bikes and skill levels are welcome and spare mallets and balls are available if you don’t have any. Check out our recent article on bike polo for more info.

PURE Austin Fitness Driveway Crit Series
5 PM, The Driveway, 8400 Delwau Lane
Weekly Thursday night road racing through October that takes place on the closed car-free driving course at the Driveway. Races include Cat 3/4 women’s and juniors race at 5:00, Cat 4/5 at 6:10, Cat 3/4 at 5:30, Pro/Cat 1/2/3 at 6:45 to choose from  Races registration $20. Full and 1/2 season passes available. USA Cycling annual or one day license required. One days for sale at race.

Thursday Night Social Ride
7:30 PM, Fiesta Gardens
A ride from the Facebook group Social Cycling ATX. Meet up at 7:30, ride at 8:00.  “We will ride some more and end up at an afterparty at the Iron Gate Lounge on East 6th Street. They bought us some kegs and are having us over for a party. Be sure you throw some money in the tip jar for all of that free beer.” Read our recent article on the popular weekly ride.

Friday, June 11

Fast Fridays Ride
7:30 PM, Lamar Blvd Pfluger Pedestrian Bridge
A brand spankin’ new weekly ride: “1 gear or several gears please come out and pedal hard with us!!! this will be weekly ride starting this friday…its similar to the metal mash but no free beer at the end of the ride… however would like to park drink afterwards…hope to see you guys and gals out there…Fast Fridays!!!”

Saturday, June 12

Mellow Johnny’s Scout-A-Ride: Lance Armstrong Bikeway Public Art Ride
8:30 AM, Mellow Johnny’s, 400 Nueces St
Saturday mornings spent exploring City of Austin bike routes finding new neighborhoods and ways to get around on your bike.  Today’s ride theme is Lance Armstrong Bikeway Public Art Ride. An early-bird art ride will kick off the event at 8:30 a.m. beginning at Mellow Johnny’s. The ride will include stops at various art installations along the route, with commentary and insights from the NextProject team. At 10:30 a.m., the ride will make a stop at the MoPac Bridge along Veterans Drive for a formal dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremony. After the ceremony, join us for a family-friendly ride to complete the 2 miles back to Mellow Johnny’s, starting at approximately 11:00 a.m. The route consists of on-street and off-street marked paths, from Veterans Drive on the west to Shady Lane on the east. These rides are meant for exploring so bring your questions and leave your heart rate monitor at home. Come by at 8:00 for coffee. Helmets required. Austin Ridge Riders June Club Ride/Meeting
9 AM, Pace Bend Park, Spicewood, TX
Pace Bend is fast becoming one of the Austin area’s favorite trails.  The variety of interconnecting trails makes for a fast, fun ride with plenty of tree cover on those hot days.  After you enter the park, look for the right turn onto Grisham Trail.  Continue on Grisham Trail and follow the signs towards Mudd Cove. We’ll ride starting at the east trail head but will stake our claim in our usual shaded area near shaded area just north of the trail head near Mudd Cove. Trail Description: The newest mountain bike trail in the Austin area. A variety of loops for the beginner to intermediate rider. 6.5 miles of new single track built by the Austin Ridge Riders combined with 8 miles of legacy equestrian and hiking trails. Limestone ledges, rock gardens, some steeper climbs, lots of challenging trail features. $10 per vehicle. (ARR members in good standing will be reimbursed the entry fee) Carpooling encouraged.

Lance Armstrong Bikeway Art Celebration
10:30 AM, underneath MoPac Bridge, Lady Bird Lake

The public is invited to join in the celebration and dedication of the public art commissioned by the City of Austin’s Art in Public Places (AIPP) Program for the Lance Armstrong Bikeway (LAB). The LAB is an east-west, six-mile bike route through Austin. The dedication ceremony will feature guest speakers from the City of Austin and a performance by the Austin Bike Zoo.

LadyBike Maintenance Class
11 AM, Yellow Bike Project HQ, 1216 Webberville Road

Learn how to maintain and repair your bike in this friendly, ladies only free class from Yellow Bike Project.

Austin World Naked Bike Ride & Booty Bounce
7:30 PM, Pease Park Picnic Tables

This bare-as-you-dare (nude or not) bike ride is an international clothing-optional event to protest oil dependency, exhibit our right to the road as vulnerable users and celebrate the beauty of the human form in a body-positive way. Join cyclists from all around the world by taking part in this annual celebration of bike (and human-powered) culture. Feel free to wear as little as you’re comfortable in, paint your body, ride a bike, ride a board, rollerskate, bring a banner, instruments, music makers, streamers, but most importantly, bring YOURSELF and ALL your friends! Meet at Pease Park at 7 PM for body painting, music, and fun and ride at 8 PM. Following the ride there WILL be a BOOTY BOUNCE Dance Party at Empire (near 7th and Red River).

Sunday, June 13

Sunday Morning Fixie Ride
8:20 AM, Posse East, 2900 Duval St
The ride is focused on fixed-gear bikes, but everyone is welcome. The ride will proceed at a social pace from the UT campus on various routes of 25-35 miles.

Eastside Home Tour
Meet up at 8:30 AM, Ride at 9 AM, Hope Market, 414 Waller Street
Austin on Two Wheels is partnering with Holly neighborhood and Buy By Bike realtor Tiffany Russell to show off this affordable, liveable neighborhood just minutes from downtown. Stop will include restored original homes as well as more recent green additions and condos. A food stop will be provided by the Shuck Shack with stops at some additional neighborhood businesses and a brief presentation from Austin CarShare. We’ll end up back at Hope Market once the market is open for a selection of organic fruits and vegetables and locally made products. Total ride distance will be approximately 5 miles. All food & drink, bike valet, and professional ride guides included in registration as well as a coupon book to series partner businesses. Dutch bike rentals available on registration page.

Monday, June 14

Weekly Ladies Ride presented by Mellow Johnny’s
5:30 PM, Mellow Johnny’s Bike Show, 400 Nueces St
At 5:30 PM, it’s a 2 hour ride for ladies only. Join experienced riders from Mellow Johnny’s for a friendly and moderately paced social ride (14-16mph average). Get more comfortable riding in a group, learn tips & tricks, and meet other like-minded cyclists. Stay afterward for champagne and strawberries at Royal Blue Grocery across the street. Some things to keep in mind before meeting us for this ride: You need a road bike in good working condition; a helmet; cycling clothing; plenty of water; and are able to ride comfortably for 2 hours without stopping.

The 6:00 Social
6 PM, Mellow Johnny’s Bike Show, 400 Nueces St
Mellow Johnny’s has a new weekday ride. It’s the 6:00 Social. It’s not the “ladies” ride. It’s co-ed. Meet at Mellow Johnny’s on Monday evenings and leaving at 6p. The ride will be 30 miles for 2-2.5hrs at 13-16mph; through neighborhoods, official bike routes, crossing a couple of large roadways, and two short sections on access roads. Helmets and lights are required (it will be dark before we return).

Restorative Yoga for Cyclists
7:30 PM, Mellow Johnny’s Bike Shop, 400 Nueces St

Come in for Restorative Yoga at Mellow Johnny’s during our summer sessions Mondays and Wednesdays from June through August. Lengthen and loosen muscles while preventing injury with John Trujillo and Anne Haskett. Join us after a ride, run, or a long day at work. Suggested donation of $10, $5 if you ride your bike to the class. Mats are provided by MJ’s.

Heavy Metal Fitness Ride hosted by Social Cycling ATX
7:30 PM, Lamar Blvd Pfluger Pedestrian Bridge
The Heavy Metal Fitness Ride has returned! Hosted by Social Cycling ATX, this ride is a higher pace and more challenging than their Thursday Night Urban Ride. The ride is 20-30 miles and usually ends with free beer and a dip in the water. Meet up at 7 PM. Ride leaves at 7:30 sharp.

Wednesday, June 16

Hump Day Ride hosted by Social Cycling ATX
Noon, Lamar Blvd Pfluger Pedestrian Bridge, Lady Bird Lake
The latest new ride from Social Cycling ATX. Social paced ride for the riders that can make it out during the work week. We will have a few stops one at a coffee shop and one for lunch. All levels are welcome. Share with your “funemployed” friends.

Taste of Downtown II Tour
RAIN DATE! 7 PM, Austin City Hall, north side of building, 301 West 2nd St
A variation on our most popular ride from our spring social ride series, we’ll take in more of the best locally made food our town has to offer. Stops will include great burgers samplers at Your Mom’s Burgers, Latin American cuisine at El Sol y La Luna, and dessert at Tart Frozen Yogurt. Vegetarian options will be available. All food and drink, bike valet, and our professional ride guides as well as our series partner businesses coupon book are included in your registration.

Fast Folks Ladies Ride

Austin’s fixed gear bike shop Fast Folks has started a weekly ladies ride as an alternative to the normally male dominated rides.

    Considering that your article on the Thursday Night Social Ride is now over a year old (written Jun 5th 2009) — I don’t think you can really refer to “our recent article” any more.
