Austin Bike Culture Calendar Events: 6/24- 6/30/10

It’s the end of the month, so regulars like Critical Mass and Frankenbike are back. Also on Wednesday, the Texas High School Mountain Bike Racing League is kicking off their fund raising to kickstart their inaugural 2011 season with a showing of “Ride The Divide” including a guest visit from the film’s producers.

Here’s a quick run down of recommended events for the coming week from our comprehensive calendar of all cycling events. Thanks to Jason at ATXBS for letting us know about some events we couldn’t find elsewhere. As always, if there is an event you know about that’s not on our calendar contact us, and we’ll add your event on and possibly add it to the weekly round up.

Mellow Johnny’s Scout-A-Ride: Trekkin’ The (paved) Trails With Mini Clinic
8:30 AM, Mellow Johnny’s, 400 Nueces St
Saturday mornings spent exploring City of Austin bike routes finding new neighborhoods and ways to get around on your bike.  This is a special version of the Scout-A-Route ride – we’ll go exploring some of our favorite hidden paved trails that make cruising downtown much easier. The pace is slow and the distance short so it’s perfect for anyone new to the bike or just getting back in the saddle again. We’ll start with a short mini-clinic including a couple skill drills and a bike check just to make sure everything is running smoothly. Come by at 8:00 for coffee. Helmets required. Ride organizer: Eileen Schaubert at eileen@mellowjohnnys.com or 512-426-4851.

FrankenBike #59
Music City Cycles, 7212 McNeil Dr # 201
Austin’s semi-regular bike parts swap is back. Need a saddle or set of pedals to finish off that project bike? Have a box of never used or lightly used bike parts in the garage your significant other wants you to get rid of? Frankenbike is your answer. Stop by for a bit or stay all afternoon to hawk you wares. As always, admission is free, recycling great stuff is priceless.

Sunday, June 27

Urban Assault Ride
8:00 AM, Fiesta Gardens
The Urban Assault Ride is a truly unique cycling event…and quickly becoming one of the biggest in country! Here’s how it works: You and your teammate will set out on a city-wide quest for ‘checkpoints’ on your favorite two-wheeled steeds.  At each checkpoint, you’ll drop your bikes and complete a funky/adventurous obstacle course, then remount your bikes and hit the streets for more. The goal is to complete all the checkpoints in the shortest amount of time. You choose your own route and checkpoint order. This means that the most clever are often the victors. After your pedal-powered adventure, your team will cross the finish line and enter a massive celebration of bikes and beer.

Sunday Morning Fixie Ride
8:20 AM, Posse East, 2900 Duval St
The ride is focused on fixed-gear bikes, but everyone is welcome. The ride will proceed at a social pace from the UT campus on various routes of 25-35 miles.
