Here’s a quick run down of recommended events for the coming week from our comprehensive calendar of all cycling events. Thanks to Jason at ATXBS for letting us know about some events we couldn’t find elsewhere. As always, if there is an event you know about that’s not on our calendar contact us, and we’ll add your event on and possibly add it to the weekly round up.
Thursday, September 23
Thursday Night Bike Polo
5:30 PM, Eastwoods Park, 3001 Harris Park Ave
The Austin Bike Polo Club’s weekday match. All bikes and skill levels are welcome and spare mallets and balls are available if you don’t have any. Check out our article on bike polo for more info.
PURE Austin Fitness Driveway Crit Series
5 PM, The Driveway, 8400 Delwau Lane
Weekly Thursday night road racing through October that takes place on the closed car-free driving course at the Driveway. Races include Cat 3/4 women’s and juniors race at 5:00, Cat 4/5 at 6:10, Cat 3/4 at 5:30, Pro/Cat 1/2/3 at 6:45 to choose from. Races registration $20. Full and 1/2 season passes available. USA Cycling annual or one day license required. One days for sale at race.
Thursday Night Social Ride
7:30 PM, Fiesta Gardens
Now winner of two 2010 Best of Austin Awards! The large weekly ride from the Facebook group Social Cycling ATX that popularized social cycling in Austin. Meet up at 7:30, ride at 8:00. Read our article on the weekly ride.
Friday, September 24
September Critical Mass Ride
5 PM, West Mall UT Campus
This bike jamming ride is designed to shout to the world that bikes belongs and occurs on the last Friday of the month. You never know what will happen, but don’t miss this foundation of the Austin bike culture we know today.
Saturday, September 25
Terra Firma Adventure Race
7 AM, Rocky Hill Ranch, Smithville, TX
Terra Firma will have two races going on at the same time! The shorter course adventure race is designed for first time racers and experienced racers alike and can be finished in 2-3 hours. It is mountain biking on singletrack trails (9-13 Miles), trail running (3-5 miles), and possible mystery events. The long course adventure race is a USARA National Qualifier Adventure Race. It is mountain biking on singletrack trails and roads (30-40 miles), canoeing (7-10 miles), trail/road running, portage, and a land navigation section (8-15 miles total). The top 3 “Terra Firma Extreme” Coed teams will qualify for the 2010 USARA Adventure Race National Championships. The winning “Coed Extreme” team will receive $500.00 towards their teams entry fee into the 2010 USARA Adventure Race National Championships. Both races are open to everyone.
2010 Mamma Jamma Ride
7:30 AM, Reunion Ranch, 907 W 5th St
The Texas Mamma Jamma Ride is a recreational bike ride to raise much needed funds for our central Texas neighbors coping with breast cancer. This festive event saves and improves lives by supporting 10 local nonprofit organizations providing diagnosis, counseling, medication, and support for thousands of our neighbors coping with breast cancer. There will be 13-, 27-, 46-, 70-, and 100-mile routes.
Rip Roarin’ Ride
8 AM, 13125 Highway 29, Liberty Hill, TX
The 9th annual “RIP ROARIN’ RIDE” sponsored by the Liberty Hill Lions Club will start at the Liberty Hill High School on Highway 29. This annual event for charitable purposes will take you through scenic rolling hills and valleys of Williamson and Burnet Counties on routes of 14, 28, 50, 65, 79, and 103 miles. This is a fully supported ride with rest stops, sag, medical and mechanical support along with the smiling faces of the friendly people of the area. Riders will start at 8 A.M.-none after 9 A.M.-and must clear the course by 4:30 P.M. You will finish back at the Liberty Hill High School where you will enjoy free food and cold drinks.
Mellow Johnny’s Scout-A-Ride: Mueller Meander
8:30 AM, Mellow Johnny’s, 400 Nueces St
Saturday mornings spent exploring City of Austin bike routes finding new neighborhoods and ways to get around on your bike. Today’s ride cruises through the east side to check out the new Mueller development then visits Cherrywood before returning. We’ve changed up the route a bit to approach Mueller from the south side to avoid the climb on 51st St. Remember to park in the street if you are driving to the shop. Come by at 8:00 for coffee. Austin’s semi-regular bike parts swap is back. Need a saddle or set of pedals to finish off that project bike? Have a box of never used or lightly used bike parts in the garage your significant other wants you to get rid of? Frankenbike is your answer. Stop by for a bit or stay all afternoon to hawk you wares. As always, admission is free, recycling great stuff is priceless.
2nd Annual South Austin Custom and Vintage Bicycle Show

Show off your lowriders, choppers, tall bikes, stretches, cruisers, mtb, fixies. Really if you have a bike your proud of, bring it.

28th Annual Moonlight Cruze
2 AM, Lamar Blvd Pfluger Pedestrian Bridge
This is the granddaddy of social rides in Austin. Held each fall during the Autumn full moon, it’s an all night ride by the light of the moon until sunrise. Don’t miss it!
Monday, September 27
The 6:00 Social
6 PM, Mellow Johnny’s Bike Show, 400 Nueces St
Mellow Johnny’s has a new weekday ride. It’s the 6:00 Social. It’s not the “ladies” ride. It’s co-ed. Meet at Mellow Johnny’s on Monday evenings and leaving at 6p. The ride will be 30 miles for 2-2.5hrs at 13-16mph; through neighborhoods, official bike routes, crossing a couple of large roadways, and two short sections on access roads. Helmets and lights are required (it will be dark before we return).
Heavy Metal Fitness Ride hosted by Social Cycling ATX
7:30 PM, Lamar Blvd Pfluger Pedestrian Bridge
The Heavy Metal Fitness Ride has returned! Hosted by Social Cycling ATX, this ride is a higher pace and more challenging than their Thursday Night Urban Ride. The ride is 20-30 miles and usually ends with free beer and a dip in the water. Meet up at 7 PM. Ride leaves at 7:30 sharp.
Tuesday, September 28
Dirt Derby
5:30 PM, Austin/Del Valle Motorcross Park, 15400 Pearce Ln, Del Valle, TX
Austin’s weekly cyclocross series returns for its fourth season at the the fully illuminated motocross course and surrounding fields at Austin/Del Valle Motorcross Park (ADVMX). There are A, B, beginners, women’s, and children’s races in cyclocross and short track mountain bike. New schedule this year: 6:30 PM Beginner race (20 min), 7:20 PM B Intermediate Race (25 min), 8:00 PM Open Race (30 min). $10, women, beginners and kids only $5. Second race same night $5. All types of bikes are welcome. There will also be a Two 7-Week Miniseries with more prizes.
2010 RunFAR Bike Time Trial Presented by CRAFT
6 PM, The Veloway, 4848 La Crosse Ave
This twice monthly time trial series on the 2nd & 4th Tuesdays is sponsored by RunFar. Approximately 8 mile Bike Time Trial on S. Mopac Loop. Starts on the southbound shoulder just past La Crosse Ave. And finishes on the northbound shoulder just before La Crosse Ave. The TT is still FREE for all Chip Owners. You can rent a chip for $5.00 if you do not own a chip or forget your chip. You may purchase a chip at the RunFAR Store OR we will have personal chips for sale at registration. First cyclist starts at 6pm. Riders may start at their discretion. Registration begins at 5:30pm and closes just before 6:55pm.
Yo!ga Ride!
7:30 PM, North East Side Town Lake @ I35 Bridge
A weekly ride from Social Cycling Austin that ends with yoga in the park and maybe a dip in Barton Springs. Bring a yoga mat, bathing suit, towel, lights for your bike, water and a lock.
Wednesday, September 29
Hump Day Ride hosted by Social Cycling ATX
Noon, Lamar Blvd Pfluger Pedestrian Bridge, Lady Bird Lake
The latest new ride from Social Cycling ATX. Social paced ride for the riders that can make it out during the work week. We will have a few stops one at a coffee shop and one for lunch. All levels are welcome. Share with your “funemployed” friends.
Mellow Johnny’s Women’s Maintenance Night
6:30- 8 PM, Mellow Johnny’s Bike Shop, 400 Nueces
Spend some time in Mellow Johnny’s service department learning the fundamentals of caring for your bike. Tonight’s class offers your choice of 2 tracks: basic cleaning and drive train maintenance or bring your bike for hands-on flat changing.
