Whoa! TXDoT meeting on Monday with beer

The Austin Cycling Association’s October meeting on Monday will be an annual hosting of TXDOT to get feedback on how they can improve facilities for cyclists. The last couple years have been pretty testy seeing as TXDOT has dutifully gotten our feedback and then routinely ignored it in the building and upgrading of state roads.

My favorite part from last year’s meeting was a TXDOT staffer admitting she would never ride a bike on their facilities because it was too dangerous. Hmm, how about actually using your own product? Until I see TXDOT employees regularly using their own facilities on a bike, I’m not accepting they are doing what they should.

Anyway, this year’s meeting should be all the more fun because it will be at Mellow Johnny’s where they will be serving snacks and beer. At the end of the meeting, they will be raffling off a Trek District donated by Trek.

So let TXDOT know what you think and challenge them to use their own facilities to find out how to make them better. The meeting will be from 6:30- 8 PM with the social time and drawings 8- 9 PM.

I’ll go you one better. I was at the NCTCOG BPAC meeting and the TxDOT official there said why should he build bike facilities into new roads if nobody was going to use them, when such has been state law effective in 2001. Somewhere I have a link to the PDF at the TxDOT site, but I can’t find it now…
