No weekly calendar round up this week. Instead, I wanted to give thanks for some things that make Austin a great place to ride a bike.
City of Austin Bike and Pedestrian Program: I’ve had my gripes in the past, but I’m thankful for a city staff that is doing a great job expanding bike infrastructure and elevating cycling as a legitimate form of transportation in Austin. Thanks guys.
Social Cycling Austin: this grass roots group puts as many new and returning cyclists on bikes as anyone and has shown us you don’t have to have a heart rate monitor and team kit to get on a bike.
Texas Custom Bicycle Show: Thanks to Glenn Thompson who created this event from nothing to allow Texans to discover there are bicycles that aren’t built in China and allowing fellow framebuilders to get to know each other better.
Event organizers: From pros like Re Licorice and Holland Racing to allycat and allycross race “organizers” Austin has a heck of a lot of different ways to ride and race your bike on any given Saturday. Thanks to all who put in the hard work and sweat the details.
The bike advocate: Much of the progress made in the last decade comes from individual citizens showing up to speak for us. Thanks to the League of Bicycling Voters and Austin Cycling Association and for individuals like Tommy Eden who represent use so well.
We hope you have a safe and happy Thanksgiving and have a chance to ride your bike.
