Unicycle Football League adds one wheel twist to gridiron

The action is fast & furious with Unicycle Football

Worry not, all you football fans out there jonesin’ now that the Super Bowl is over. The Unicycle Football League has got you covered. Austin’s team Hell on Wheel was out at Auditorium Shores on Saturday playing a exhibition game, jousting on one wheel, and giving unicycle lessons in a bid to grow the league and add more Austin teams.

The Unicycle Football League was started a few years ago in San Marcos where the league plays on Sunday afternoons. The rules are similar to flag football but of course involve all the team members including the quarterback staying upright on unicycles. The season ends with the championship Stuper Bowl game on April 17.

There are currently five teams based out of San Marcos: the Berzerkers, Gnarwhals, Hot Dogs, Unicycho, and Ill Eagles. Most games are played in San Marcos but occasionally they make it to Austin. Hell on Wheel is recruiting for Austin members and those interested in playing or putting together their own team should contact Marcus at mg1357@txstate.edu.

My name is Brooke Lee and I am a broadcast major at UT. I am wanting to do a story about unicycle football and was wondering who I should contact for interviews. I saw the schedule online and i am afraid that I might be too late. Please let me know if the league is over or if there are at least practices that I can come film. This is a very interesting story and I am looking forward to learning more about the sport and spreading the word. Thanks again for your time.

    Brooke,
I’d contact the folks on the league contact page: http://www.unicyclefootball.com/contact.html. They do not league pickup games from time to time, and I’m sure they’d be happy to have you film them.
