Bikesharing at the Alamo

This weekend, bikesharing will officially come to Texas, but it will be San Antonio who kicks off the kiosk driven, short term rental program. On Saturday, San Antonio will be launching bikeshare in partnership with B-Cycle, a national bikesharing company. Austin’s 2009 Master Bicycle Plan calls for a citywide bikeshare program by 2020, and last year the City hosted a demo of B-Cycle as a potential vendor. I’ve been a little skeptical of the effects of bikeshare in the past, but impressive successes in Barcelona and Seville have softened my view. I guess we’ll see since San Antonio is about as car dependent a city in Texas as there is.

On Saturday, B-Cycle is having a launch party for the service with free breakfast to take part in the first rentals:

Show up Saturday morning and be a part of Texas history to launch the San Antonio B-Cycle System!

When: Saturday, March 26: 7:30a-12:00p

Where: Central Hub- 600 Hemisfair Plaza Way, Bldg. 203 (S. Alamo and Durango)

The 1st half hour is of any trip is included in your $10 one day, $24 7-day or $60 annual membership. Each 30 minutes after is $2 with a daily max of $35. More info and sign-ups at the B-Cycle San Antonio site.

I’m from Barcelona and I love BICING. I wish we had it here in Austin! I remember in Barcelona ten years ago only a few people were riding bikes and now it is massive! People from all ages are riding bikes and the city has became super bike friendly.
It is a matter of having safe bike lines and of being adventurous and open mind!
