U.S. Post Office announces bicycle themed stamps for 2012

We’ve had presidents, movie stars, landmarks, and even Cabbage Patch Dolls but finally bicycles will be gracing U.S. stamps next year. The U.S. Post Office announced a new series of Forever Stamps for 2012.

Sorry, roadies. You got lumped with tri-geeks.

Sorry, roadies. You got lumped with tri-geeks.

In an attempt to cover every cycling clique in one 4-stamp series, the stamps include a child with training wheels, a cyclo-tourist/bike commuter, a triathlete/time trialist, and a BMXer (sorry, no fixie hipsters or recumbulators.)

“We are excited to promote one of the nation’s most popular outdoor activities with the issuance of these four Bicycling stamps,” added Kearney. “These days, increasing numbers of Americans ride bikes to work or use them to run neighborhood errands. Many travel organizations offer cycling tours, from leisurely half-day jaunts to weeks-long excursions. No matter how long the ride, choosing to bike rather than to drive cuts down on traffic congestion, fuel consumption and vehicle emissions, which benefits the environment and helps improve air quality.”

The Postal Service is helping the environment by delivering mail by bicycle in locations throughout Arizona and Florida.

Mail was once delivered by bike in most cities around the world. Despite an organized protest, British Royal Mail recently got rid of over a century of nationwide delivery of mail by bike citing “health and safety concerns.”

The health concerns are that with more packages rather than letters being delivered, the mail bags are getting heavy, as much as 35 pound! Is this the attitude that created the largest empire the world has ever seen? I ride a cargo bike with 100 pounds of kids weekly without ill effects to my health. If health is an issue, sitting in a van all day will make surely saddle these posties with expanding waist lines and increased chance of heart disease. And road safety? Instead of making streets that are safe for all users, the British government has chucked it all and added yet more automobiles to the road. Looks like Rule Britannia has become Capitulate Britannia.
