New A2W Sponsor: CycleTracks App

Austin on Two Wheels is pleased to announce our latest sponsor, the CycleTracks Application. The smartphone application was developed by San Francisco County Transportation Authority to help determine the need for new bicycle facilities and is currently being tested in Austin by the Texas Transportation Institute at the Texas A&M University System in partnership with the Texas Department of Transportation and the City of Austin

CycleTracks works on the iPhone and Android phones and anonymously collects data on why and where cyclists ride. Users specify a purpose for each trip (commuting, shopping, exercise, etc.) and tell the app when to start and stop recording the ride. At the end, data representing the purpose, route, date and time are confidentially sent to the Transportation Authority’s servers. Users can cancel a trip at any time for any reason and no data will be sent.

Why Austin as a test market?

Austin was chosen for this project because of its strong cycling culture, its known bicycle-friendliness, and the presence of several universities including the University of Texas which makes it an ideal test environment. There are currently 200 cyclists in the Austin area using the app having already logged 1900 trips. The Texas Transportation Institute would like to have more cyclists using the app so that the data better reflects the transportation patterns and needs of the Austin community.
