The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has announced to large recalls that effect Specialized cyclocross and hybrid bikes as well as NEXT brand bikes, a low cost mountain bike hybrid sold in big box retailers like Walmart.

Attention cyclocrossers: if you are riding a new Specialized Tricross, check out this recall to make sure your bike is not included.

The Specialized recall is in regards to the Advanced Group carbon forks on their Sirrus Expert, Sirrus Comp, Sirrus Elite, Vita Expert, Vita Comp, Vita Elite, Vita Elite Step Thru, Tricross Sport, Tricross, and Tricross Comp bikes. The brake boss for the cantilever/v brakes can brake off not only leaving you with no front brakes but also pieces of dangling brakes and fork that can get trapped in a rotating wheel causing a crash. The recall affects about 14,200 2011 model year bikes which could have been sold from June 2010 through August 2011. Consumers should immediately stop riding these bicycles and return them to an authorized Specialized retailer for a free repair or replacement carbon fork. For additional information, contact Specialized toll-free at (877) 808-8154 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. PT Monday through Friday, or visit the company’s website at www.specialized.com.

Men's 26" NEXT Power X & Suspension bikes have been recalled

The second recall is more massive though the problem quickly fixable. Bridgeway International has recalled 91,000 of their NEXT model bikes in the men’s 26-inch hybrid bicycle version. The recall is in regards to the chains installed on the bikes which can break while pedaling causing injury or a crash. The bicycles were sold at Walmart from February 2011 through July 2011 for about $100 and are red or orange. “Power X” and “Suspension” are printed on the frame. Model numbers LBH2611M and LBH2611M2 are included in this recall. The model number is located on the frame between the pedals. Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled bicycle and contact the company for a free repair. (Of course you could put a quality chain on it from your local bike store which would instantly be the nicest thing on this bike.) For additional information, contact Bridgeway International at (877) 934-3228 anytime or visit the firm’s website at www.powerxbike.com.

Commuter and utility bike company Civia has issued a voluntary recall of the carbon fork equipped on all their Hyland bikes.

A few weeks ago we became aware that our carbon fork does not meet our expectation for product safety. We have seen a couple forks begin to crack around the steerer tube and one had the steerer tube separate entirely from the fork legs. Thankfully, the rider was not seriously injured when the separation occurred.

We’ve conducted 3rd party testing and have concluded that the problem we’re seeing is the fork was designed to be stiff so that under braking, the legs would not wander around creating a noodly fork feel. An unanticipated by-product of this leg stiffness is that the fork legs aren’t moving at all during regular braking and in turn, all of the braking force is passed up to the crown. These forces are over time will lead to potential failure.

We are in the process of contacting all of the bike shops that have purchased forks, or Hylands with the forks installed. The dealers will be working to contact all of the consumers that have purchased Hyland bikes or Hyland carbon forks. 100% of the Civia carbon forks are affected by this recall.

If you own a Hyland that has a carbon fork, or have purchased the Civia Carbon fork, please contact your dealer for information about how to go about obtaining a replacement Civia steel fork. We are also extending a credit to the consumer through the bike shop as compensation for the change in value from carbon to steel. For more details of the recall, please contact the dealer you purchased your Hyland or carbon fork from.

Beginning now, all Hyland complete bikes are coming with Civia steel forks. Pricing has been adjusted accordingly so that now Alfine builds are retailing for $1,575 and Rohloff builds for $3,250.

Child trailer maker Burley has issues a voluntary recall of 2009 d’Lite ST and Solo ST trailers due to a problem with the manufacturing of the axle that can cause separation in use. The affected axles may not be press fit correctly causing the axle to loosen and break the welds securing it.

A single incident of seperation has been reported but no injuries were involved. However Burley cautions failure of the axle could result in injury. The affected axle is painted black while replacement axles are painted gray.

This recall does not effect chains nor connectors on 8 or 9 speed chains. Only PowerLock connectors at issue are with “date codes M and N (on PowerLock ONLY). Date code letter is stamped onto end of each PowerLock connector link outer plate.” Consumers with affected PowerLocks are asked to return the connector to their SRAM dealer for a free replacement.
