From the Department of the Obvious: Study finds bike lanes, paths increase safety

BikePortland recently reported on a study published in Environmental Health that aggregated the results of 23 recent English language reports on bicycle crash data. In contrast to what some (including the [update] former Dallas Bike Coordinator) say, the report found that bicycle infrastructure such as bike lanes and bike paths were safer for cyclists than [...]

City wants feedback on Bicycle Theft Resolution

If you work in the Austin cycling community, or, I would presume, an affiliated organization, the City of Austin would like to meet with you and get your feedback regarding an educational campaign they are starting.
Here’s the full email, forwarded to us by the ever-stalwart Leslie Luciano of Bicycle Sport Shop (she now of the [...]

Virginia trying zigzag road lines

Thanks to reader Eric for sending this in:
The Virginia Department of Transportation is trying a crooked, zigzag line road painting scheme that has proven successful in increasing awareness of pedestrian zones in the UK. The presence of road lines painted in crooked patterns on purpose helps create a break in drivers’ thought processes and reminds [...]

Scary streets

I saw this story via the Streetsblog Network last week,  posted by Livable Streets for West Palm Beach. I think we can all relate to the author’s stories of being intimidated and threatened by drivers who just couldn’t stand to slow down for a few seconds; the kind who think they really do own the [...]

Safe Passing Bill Texas House hearing Tuesday morning

From the Texas Bicycle Coalition:
The 2009 Safe Passing Bill will have a Texas House hearing by the Transportation Committee next Tuesday, March 24 at 8:00am. The room at the capitol is E2.014.
The bill includes the “3-feet clearance” provision for cars passing cyclists. It has also been expanded to address right and left hooks and harassment [...]

Highly visible commuter

Sitting around people watching a bit on second street Tuesday I saw this cyclist fly by and grabbed a quick photo with my Blackberry. I though it was impressive how his bike and safety vest matched so exactly. This is one commuter who will be SEEN in traffic.

Boardwalk Trail extension vote moved to March 5, tell Council you want it!

The vote on Hike & Bike Trail boardwalk extension has been moved to March 5. That means you have a little more time to tell our city council members you support this project. Do it!
On March 5, the Austin City Council will be voting on a proposed plan for completing the gap in the Hike [...]

Dear Randall’s, thanks for the “Bike Rack”

…but can we get a real one next time?
When my neighborhood Randall’s grocery store was “refreshed” or whatever you wanna call it (the store at Ben White & Manchaca if you’re wondering), they were kind enough to install this row of “bicycle racks” on the side of the building. Bike rack goes in quotes in [...]

The ABC’s of A,B, and C Cyclist Categories

In our recent posting about the Downtown Austin Plan, you may have been confused by the part about accommodating “A,B, and C Cyclists” – and so, to clear things up, I asked Nathan Wilkes at the City of Austin for an explanation of that that all means. Here’s what the official categories mean and why [...]

Fixed-Gear Riders getting ticketed in San Marcos

According to the blog of east Austin store Complete Clothing, fixed gear riders are getting ticketed in San Marcos. Now, this is a real bummer, but I would attribute it more to confusion on the part of law enforcement than any sort of “crackdown on fixed gear culture.” I think it’s more likely that San [...]
